Memorial Stadium was designated in 1942 to honor Clemson's
alumni who served in the Armed Forces. There is currently no manifestation of
this purpose. The Scroll of Honor should be erected contiguous to Memorial Stadium
to honor those who gave the "ultimate sacrifice" in service to their nation.
The Scroll was initiated in 2002, which recognizes alumni
who were killed while performing military duties. Clemson University currently
has 468 alumni identified:
WWI: 27
Nicaraguan Campaign: 1
WWII: 378
Korea: 17
Cuban Missile Crisis: 1
Vietnam: 25
Cold War: 16
Afghanistan & Iraq: 3
The creation of the Scroll of Honor underscores the purpose
for naming "Memorial Stadium," as well as building on the defining qualities of
Clemson University. It also perpetuates the rich military heritage that makes
Clemson. The Scroll of Honor will link the West Zone to Tillman Hall as well as
honor our 468 HEROES.
Roy Pearce reported in The
Tiger on April 7, 1944 "It made me sad to read the honor roll...All were
gallant men and we'll never let them down, never!"
